We like to talk about eating with our eyes, the visual appeal of the dish influencing how we enjoy it. But that rule just does not apply at Halloween!
Chefs and bakers best look away now because this season we have surpassed ourselves and created a dish that simply sends shivers down the spine of even the most unshakeable, California Prune Raw Witches Fingers.
California Prune Raw Witches Fingers
Ugly aren’t they? And despite not ever having met a real life witch, they appear rather too realistic. We think Roald Dahl’s Witches fingers would have looked exactly like these and hence the need for those gloves.
Not only will the children love the look of these fingers, they will love eating them too, packed full of fruity goodness. But parents needn’t worry because while Halloween normally means a sugar overload, our Raw Witches Fingers contain no added sugar, all the sweetness coming from the California Prunes, dates, maple syrup and honey.
So get the children involved and give them the fun of making their own Halloween party treats with this incredibly quick and simple recipe.
Raw Witches Fingers Ingredients:
- 5 California prunes
- 3 dates
- 2 tbsp maple syrup
- 1 tbsp honey
- 1 tbsp water
- (optional) pinch of salt
- ¼ tsp ground cloves
- 1 tsp dark cocoa powder
- ¼ tsp ground cardamom
- 75g walnuts
- 90g almonds
- pumpkin seeds and 1 tsp red fruit puree for decoration
Blend almonds and walnuts until almost ground and set aside.
In a food processor blend California prunes, dates, maple syrup and honey until a paste is formed. Add water if needed.
Add the almonds and walnuts, salt, cocoa powder and spices and blend until a dough forms. If dough is to sticky add a bit more almonds/walnuts.
Divide the dough into 1 inch balls and roll them into finger shapes. Use a fork to add details across the knuckles.
Place pumpkin seed at the tip using small amount of fruit puree. And if you are feeling particularly gruesome you could dip the severed end of the finger in the red fruit puree too!
Serve immediately or keep refrigerated until needed. Raw Witches Fingers can be made a day ahead.
